Every city or village has its own legend, which tells about its name. Nemyriv – a small city in the former prince's Velashchyna, a present settlement in Javorivskyi district, Lviv region – also has such a legend: as long ago as the 13th century, when the Mongol and Tatar hordes invaded the territories of Ukraine and Rus, an armed force of the Galician warriors met them in one of the hollows. A cruel battle began, but still Rusyches (Ukrainians) managed not to let the invaders farther and to defeat their detachments. The exhausted Tatars asked the Russian voivode for peace, but he answered without hesitations: “No peace!” – and ordered to turn out the invaders. In memory of this exploit of Galician warriors, their descendants called the hollow as Nemyriv. “Nemyriv” is one of the oldest resorts of Ukraine. The healing properties of Nemyriv’s hydrogen-sulphidous mineral water were well-known as far back as the 16th century, but official data about the resort refer to 1824. Professor Radzyshevskyi studied the today’s springs of mineral hydrogen-sulphidous water “Boryslav” and “Maria” in 1905-1906. Medicinal peat mud was discovered in 1912 here, and the spring of mineral drinking water “Olexandra” was found in 1929.
